Loft conversion Party Wall Notice
Many terraced and semi-detached lofts cut into or bear on a shared wall, or remove a chimney breast that is shared. That often means a party structure notice may be needed. A detached house with no shared structure is a different question, and still needs a look at the drawings.

The usual lead-in for a party structure notice is two months before the notifiable work, as a general rule. Builders’ start dates are often sooner than that. Tell us the real date. If the loft has already been opened, the file is flagged for urgent review rather than put through the standard quote.
- Existing and proposed loft plans
- A section through the party wall
- Steel layout, if the engineer has done one
- Whether a chimney breast is being removed
- Who owns the house next door, including any freeholder
Building regulations approval for the loft is separate. So is any planning application for dormers or roof shape.
